Yale Sports Medicine

Sports related injuries require specialized care care to promote optimum healing. Whether you are are a weekend jogger or tennis player, a professional soccer player or marathon runner, a child or senior citizen, or even a musician or actress, trauma to the muscles and joints can limit or prevent your participation in these activities. To provide proper diagnosis and prevent future injuries, the Yale University School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital have created the Yale Sports Medicine Center.

The Sports Medicine Center offers diagnosis and treatment of all athletic injuries plus pre-sports participation exams. Outpatient surgery is performed at the YNHH Health Service facilities in Guilford, Temple Surgical Center, and Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. Arthroscopy, a microsurgical technique, is often employed to repair joints while traditional reconstructive surgery is used for musculoskeletal damage.

Other treatments include custom-made orthotics, braces, sports splints and personalized home rehabilitation programs. Staff members often consult with high school and university coaches and offer second opinions. Seminars focusing on prevention and the latest treatment methods are conducted regularly for coaches, trainers, and physicians.

The Center also provides medical coverage for various athletic events and teams including the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament (WTA Event), the New Haven Road Race, and several area High Schools.

Among special services offered by the Center are the following:

  • Knee ligament reconstruction (primary, revision & multi-ligament)
  • Hip, knee, ankle, shoulder and elbow arthroscopy
  • Cartilage preserving & restoration procedures (including Micofracture, Osteochondral Transfer (OAT) and Carticel® implantation)
  • On-site physical therapy
  • Non-operative and alternative treatments for common sports injuries
